For some professionals, dipping into the social media realm may be a little intimidating. They may have seen their kids on MySpace or heard their colleagues talk about Facebook; they might have even received a LinkedIn invitation, but the whole this is just a bit too out there.
Any sort of technology paradigm shift can feel a bit unsettling for the uninitiated, but it’s really not that scary. At the core element of it all, the simplest way to put it is like this: Facebook is for socializing, LinkedIn is for business.
Now, that’s a bit oversimplifying it as LinkedIn has social elements and Facebook can be used for business. In general, LinkedIn is used to build your network of contacts; you can send private messages to people within a certain degree of association. LinkedIn also has blog and update functionality, and has very-active groups. These groups are essentially forums for professionals to talk shop, though there are a number of forums that have little to do with work and are more about shared interest.
Facebook is more about catching up with what your friends and family are doing through text updates, photos, and videos. However, you can promote your business by setting up a Facebook Fan Page, then linking to that off your website. This means that if you write any updates on your Fan Page, all of your Fans will receive updates. It works pretty much like an email blast or newsletter mailing, but it’s on a service that they’ll probably use more often!
